How to Turn Double Opt-In Off in Klaviyo

If you're building an email list for your Shopify store, there's one small setting in Klaviyo that can make a big difference in your conversion rate: your opt-in settings.

Hi, I'm Hannah, founder of LaRose & Co.—an email marketing agency for eCommerce brands—and today I’m walking you through a quick audit to ensure Double Opt-In is turned off in your Klaviyo account.

Let’s dive in.

Why You Should Disable Double Opt-In

Before we get into the how, here’s the why at LaRose & Co., we always recommend Single Opt-In over Double Opt-In:

  • Double Opt-In forces subscribers to confirm their subscription through a second email.

  • That second step adds friction—and the more hoops someone has to jump through, the more likely they’ll drop off.

  • This ultimately lowers your list growth and conversion rate.

Single Opt-In, on the other hand, ensures that as soon as someone enters their email and clicks submit, they’re added to your list and can immediately receive the automation or discount offer they signed up for.

Now, let’s show you how to turn it on.

Step-by-Step: How to Check and Disable Double Opt-In in Klaviyo

  1. Log in to Klaviyo and go to your dashboard.

  2. In the left-hand menu, click on Audiences > Lists & Segments.

  3. At the top, use the third dropdown filter and select “Lists” to hide segments and show only your lists.

  4. Choose one of your lists (e.g., “Newsletter” or whatever naming convention you use).

  5. Click into the list, then go to the Settings tab.

  6. From there, click on Consent.

  7. Under Opt-In Process, change the setting from Double Opt-In to Single Opt-In.

  8. Hit Save.

That’s it! 🎉

Repeat those steps for any other lists you have.

Bonus Tips for List Segmentation

You may have multiple lists based on how and where people subscribe:

  • A pop-up offering a discount

  • A checkout subscription box

  • An embedded form on a landing page

Each of these might feed into different lists, especially if you want to segment based on behavior or interest. Make sure you’ve disabled double opt-in on every single one to avoid bottlenecks in your list growth.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those small backend settings that’s easy to overlook, but turning off Double Opt-In can have a huge impact on your signup rate. And if you’re running welcome flows, discount offers, or post-purchase campaigns, it ensures your automations are triggered instantly—no second steps needed.
